Why do I need to install Java to use the Experiment Platform?

In order to access data from sensors attached to an Arduino, your browser needs to have access to the serial port (the connection where the data is flowing from). Java enables this connection since browsers typically do not. We understand that some folks would rather not deal with Java at all. If that’s you, it’s still possible to work with the experiment platform.

It is worth noting that this is currently only a requirement for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Chrome removed the ability to use Java applets, so if Chrome is your browser of choice - take a look at the chrome app:
